Could the paintbrush be mightier than a pill?
"I see severely impaired patients who previously lacked social skills not only working together, but encouraging and helping each other…
I see people holding a paintbrush, following directions, smiling. Patients who have been in the secure or locked unit for months or years without response have awakened, and are able to transfer to open units.
I credit the art program as a part of these transformations."

Healing Hearts is an art therapy approach, developed by artist/educator Linda Bounds, whose techniques and insights have benefited thousands of people at dozens of organizations nationwide. The program was successfully piloted in 2007 at Edgemoor, a County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency skilled nursing facility. In an era of limited funds and diminishing budgets, the best way to ensure Healing Hearts at Edgemoor can continue is to make it a self-sustaining, privately funded program.
